Veritas Press Logic Unit Two Review Flashcards
What is a self-contradiction? (Lesson 7)
A self-contradiction is a statement that is false due to its logical structure.
What is a statement? (Lesson 6)
a sentence that is either true or false.
What are the possible truth values of a statement? (Lesson 6)
true or false.
Questions, commands, and nonsense sentences are not statements because they do not have a truth value.
What is a Tautology? (Lesson 7)
A tautology is a statement that is always true by logical structure.
What is a self-supporting statement? (Lesson 7)
a statement whose truth value can be determined from the statement itself.
What are the three types of self-supporting statements? (Lesson 7)
Self-reports
Statements that are true or false by logical structure.
Statements that are true or false by definition
Give an example of a self-report (Lesson 7)
A self report is a statement by a person concerning his own desires, beliefs or feelings.
Example: “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God”.
What is the difference between a tautology and self-contradiction? (Lesson 7)
A tautology is always true by its logical structure, a self-contradiction is always false by its logical structure.
Give an example of a statement that is false by definition. (Lesson 7)
A statement that is false by definition is a statement that can be seen to be false by how the sentence is put together.
Example: “Jesus is the Son of God, or He is not the Son of God”.
LESSON 12
LESSON 12
What is the difference between a supported statement and a self-supporting statement? (Lesson 8)
A supported statement is a statement whose truth value depends on evidence or information from outside itself.
A self-supporting statement is a statement that has immediately apparent truth values.
The distinction between the two depends upon the means by which the truth value of the statement is determined.
What are three methods of determining the truth value of supported statements? (Lesson 8)
Authority
experience or observation
deduction
Do any other methods exist? (lesson 8)
Yes
Isaac Watts identified six types, but this book focuses on three.
