Locate the following themes:
- The jealousy theme in the Prelude
- A phrase from the Prelude and its recurrence at the start of Scene I.
- The introductory phrase to Scene II, and it’s recurrence later in section 1.
- The melody that Desdemona sings at the beginning of Scene II (section 1, the duet)
and its recurrence in the accompaniment at the start of section 4.

- p 203 Last two bars from Letter A, p 204 at 3/4 time signature
- p206 Letter C, p 209 Letter E
- p 206 bar 4, p 224 bar 6
What function and effect do these recurring themes have?
Refer to things such as characters, topics (e.g. jealousy)
Find some places where the “jealousy” theme returns in section 1 of Scene II (in rhythmic
diminution.)

How does this correspond to, and mark a turning point in, the drama/ action taking place?
Begin turning point of his restrained mounting rage
What dramatic function does the postlude serve?
Dramatic commentary on Otello’s anger
Look for some places where Verdi exploits certain keys (especially F major.) How do these
make reference to the drama taking place?
- use of key changes to signal entrance of different characters and changes in the mood of characters (eg: F Major refers to Iago and his influence over Otello)
How is Verdi’s approach to drama/ action/ character development reflected in his treatment
of music? How is this different to Wagner?
