auxiliary verb
verb used to join an adjective or noun complement to a subject. e.g., ‘seem’, ‘was’, ‘look’.
copular verb
expresses a wide range of actions that may be physical (to run), mental (to ponder), or perceptual (to see).
dynamic verb
describe a state or condition that is stable or unlikely to change (can be relational or mental)
stative verb
a verb that uses a direct object, which shows who or what receives the action in a sentence.
transitive verb
verb that doesn’t need a direct object
intransitive verb
forms of a verb in which the subject is typically the person or thing performing the action and which can take a direct object
active voice
forms of a verb in which the subject undergoes the action of the verb
passive voice
grammatical mood that forms a command or request
imperative mood
grammatical mood used to state facts or opinions and to ask questions
indicative mood
a grammatical mood of the verb that is used to ask questions
interrogative mood
grammatical mood expressed in sentences that show that an action will occur if certain conditions are met.
conditional mood
grammatical mood used to refer to a hypothetical scenario or to express a wish, suggestion, or command (e.g., ‘I suggest you be quiet’).
