They are verb forms ending in -ing used as nouns. They are identical to the present participle in form but differ in function.
Gerunds
It is a gerund with modifiers or a complement, all acting together as a noun.
Gerund phrase
A gerund/gerund phrase may be used as:
- As a subject
- As a subjective complement
- As a direct object
- As an object of the preposition
- As an appositive

Direct object
Identify the function:
“This semester, all Joel wanted was to pass.”
Subjective complement
Identify the function:
“The race was about to start.”
Object of the preposition
Identify the function:
“The suggestion, to forfeit, was rejected.”
Appositive
It is a verbal that functions as an adjective.
Participles
Two kinds of participles
Present participle and Past participle
They are always ending in -ing, are created from the form of a verb used with the verb to be ( am, is, are, was, were, been) as an auxiliary verb (progressive tense).
Present participles
They are usually ending in -ed or -en, are created from the form of a verb used with the verb to be as an auxiliary verb (passive voice).
Past participles
It is a participle that is modified by an adverb or adverb phrase that has a complement. The entire phrase acts as an adjective in a sentence.
