Verb Tenses Flashcards
Simple present tense
Tense that shows something that does or doesn’t happen regularly. It shows habit
Simple past tense
Shows something happened in the past at a particular time and is finished.
Simple future tense
Uses the word will.
Present progressive
Shows what is happening right now
Past progressive
Action that was continuing at a particular time in the past
Future progressive
Action that will be happening continuously in the future
Present perfect
Action that happened in the past before now. The present moment is important.
Steve has eaten sushi before. Now is implied.
Past perfect
Action that is completely in the past. The present is not important.
There are two actions and it shows one action happened before the other.
Future perfect
Refers to two actions in the future where one will happen before the other.
Uses the future perfect will have.
I will have seen the movie 6 times by next week. The two times are seeing the movie and next week.
Present perfect progressive
Action that started before now and has continued or may continue longer.
Past perfect progressive
Action that was going on in the past and may have been going on before something else.
Future perfect progressive
Action that will be happening continuously at some time in the future.
Present perfect vs present perfect progressive
Julie has studied Vs Julie has been studying are similar and can be interchanged.
Present perfect signal words or phrases (ie, not interchangeable with present perfect progressive)
One time Two times Once Twice Before
Present perfect progressive signal words or phrases (ie, cannot be interchanged with present perfect)
For one hour
For a day / year / week
All day / week / year / weekend
