What is verb aspect?
Tenses for tenses (tenses but moreso). There are 4 baby tenses in the Past tense, present tense, and future tense. Helps you situate, more exactly, your verbs in time
What is the simple verb aspect?
A general statement.
Can be past present and future.
The past and present have no helping verb. Future tense has will as a helping verb.
What is the simple present aspect?
A general statement. It is in base form and has no helping verb
For example: I like sushi
What is the simple past aspect?
General statement about something that happened. No helping verb
For example: I loved that cake
What is the simple future aspect
General statement about something that will happen.
For example: I will make soup
What is the progressive verb aspect?
For an ongoing action in the past, present, or future.
What is the present progressive aspect?
For an ongoing action and is
Form: with the present tense of be plus the -ing verb
For example: I am eating cake.
What is the past progressive aspect?
For an ongoing action, usually something that was interrupted when something else happened.
Form: past tense of be+ verb ing
For example: We were watching Naruto when the lightning struck our house.
What is the future progressive aspect?
For something ongoing in the future.
Form: will + be + verb ing
For example: I will be working all weekend.
What is the perfect verb aspect?
Something completed. Can be used with past, present, and future tense.
What is the present perfect aspect?
Completed in the past, but relevant to the present.
Form: present tense of have + the participle form of the verb
For example: Now that you’ve finished, let’s go!
What is the past perfect aspect?
Completed before something else in the past
Form : had + ed/ past participle form of the verb
For example: Luckily, I had done the dishes before my mom got home.
What is the future perfect aspect?
Something that will be completed in the future.
Form: will have + ed/ past participle form of the verb
I will have finished the cookies by then.
What is the present perfect progressive?
Ongoing actions that started in the past that are still going on now.
Form: present tense have + been + verbing
For example: I have been reading the book.
What is the past perfect progressive aspect?
For an action ongoing in the past, before it stopped when something else in the past happened.
Form: had been + verb ing
For example: They had been working on the project until it got canceled.
