Venus Flashcards
1
Q
Where can we see Venus in the sky?
A
Brilliant white. Seen as ‘morning star’ in East
before sunrise or ‘evening star’ in West after sunset
2
Q
What are the basic information about Venus?
A
Venus is 28% closer to the Sun having an orbital period of 225 Earth days
- Venus has the most circular orbit of any planet
- Venus is roughly 95% the size, 81% the mass of the Earth
- Venus has a very similar density to the Earth
- Very similar gravity and escape velocity
- Venus is extremely reflective having an albedo of 59%
3
Q
Venusian solar day
A
= 117 Earth days
About 2 Venusian days per year!
4
Q
Why there is no tectonic plate on Venus?
A
- No layer of flexible rock beneath crust (asthenosphere) due to lack of water
- Crust is too weak to break into plates due to high temperatures
5
Q
What kind of gas do active and dormant volcanoes emit?
A
Active and dormant volcanoes emit lots of sulfur
compounds which are seen in the atmosphere
Concentrations vary with time indicating activity
