Debris Flashcards
What is Asteroid?
Rocky debris larger than 100 m
Also known as minor planets
Where is The Asteroid Belt?
Between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter
What are the types of Asteroid?
C-type Asteroids: Rich in carbon
S-type Asteroids: Rocky – made mostly of silicates
M-type Asteroids: Made mostly of iron and nickel
What is Comet?
Chunks of ice and dust orbiting the Sun
Dust particles trapped in mixture of water,
methane, ammonia and carbon dioxide ices
Origins of Comets?
Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud
Detecting techniques for Exoplanets?
Gravitational Microlensing, Transit method, Astronomy, Radial Velocity, Direct Imaging
What are Meteoroids?
Small rocky debris orbiting the Sun
Smaller than 100 m
Much more common than asteroids
What are Meteors?
Small meteoroids vaporizing in the Earth’s atmosphere
Typically the size of pebbles or smaller
What is Meteorite?
A meteoroid that reaches the surface
What are five main kinds of meteorite?
Stony (Achondrite) Meteorites Iron Meteorites Stony Iron Meteorites Carbonaceous Chondrite Meteorites: eg:The Allende Meteorite Planetary Achondrites
