Ventilation Flashcards
What are the uses of ventilation
Cooling of electronic equipment
CBRN
Habitability
Main machinery space cooling
Galley ventilation
List all the configurations of ventilation and what they do
Fan supply and fan exhaust - machinery spaces, galleys, laundries, WC’s
Fan supply and natural exhaust - store rooms and workshops
Natural supply and fan exhaust - paint rooms, spirit rooms, inflame stores
Natural supply and natural exhaust - unoccupied compartments and lobbies
Name the common filters and their use
Panel filter - Re-circulating trunking associated with air con systems
Supply filter - Polyurethane fitted in ATU
Grease filter - Fitted to exhaust canopies on deep fat fryers
Lint filter - prevent fluff and fibres in exhaust trunking in laundries
Dust filter fitted to computer and sonar spaces and sick bay
Flameproof gauzes - fitted to inflame stores, paint shops, magazines, hangers, vehicle decks
What are the special requirements
Galleys - have fire flaps fitted to their exhaust trunking
Store rooms - Subject to the build up of fumes (co2) which is heavier than air
Auxiliary machine spaces - to prevent build up of gas 50% of exhaust terminals found at deck level
Sewage treatment spaces - require 15 air changes per house with a separate exhaust system
Magazines - fitted with their own air conditioning system
What does ATU and AFU stand for and when are ATU’s used
Air treatment unit
Air filtration unit, used in CBRN state 1, condition ZULU ALFA
Name the 3 sections of the AFU
Pre-particulate filter - paper filter which removes coarse particle matter including radioactive fall-out
Particulate filter - made of glass fibre, designed to remove particulate such as bacteria by entrapment
Gas filter - designed to remove all chemical warfare agents in the form of gases or vapours from airstream by absorption in the active charcoal filling
Describe a citadel
As a whole ship, chemical, biological and nuclear shelter
Formed by closing down the whole ship to increase a gas tight state
The citadel works by increasing the atmospheric pressure within the ship above external pressure using air filtration by AFU
When should citadel tests be carried out
Annually
Prior to DED (Docking extended duration)
During harbour acceptance trials (HATS)
During sea acceptance trials (SATS)
FOST work-up
What is a crash stop facility
Built into the ventilation system, it allows all fans to be stopped incase of an emergency (FIRE, CRASH ON DECK)
What must be checked when restarting the ventilation systems
Vent intake should be checked they are cleared of smoke, welding fumes and debris
