veneers Flashcards
indications for veneers
**improve aesthetics
change teeth shape/contour
correct peg-shaped laterals
reduce/close proximal spaces and diastemas
align labial surfaces of instanding teeth
enamel defects
discolouration
types veneers
PLV
laminate
composite
gold
laminate veneers
v thin, doesn’t overlap incisal edge
gold veneers
palatal where significant toothwear
good fct aspect - strong and good marginal finish
contraindications veneers
poor OH high caries rate gingival recession root exposure high lip line if extensive prep needed (>50% SA no longer in E) labially positioned, severely rotated and overlapping teeth extensive TSL/insufficient bonding area heavy occlusal contacts severe discolouration
preparations for veneers
none in some cases depth cuts - prevents you over-preparing if prep required - incisal reduction 1-2mm - incisal 1/3 0.7mm - mid 1/3 0.5mm - cervical 1/3 0.3mm = E thinner near cervical margin slight chamfer margin - supragingival - 0.5mm subgingival - but warn pt of risk of recession over time maintain IP contacts
type of veneer preps
feather
window
bevel
incisal overlap
why should veneer prep be kept in E?
composite bonds much better to E than to D - veneers rely heavily on chemical bond
veneer temporisation
may not need one alternative - spot bonded composite - no etch - small spot of primer and adhesive - directly apply composite - will flick off with an excavator when you need to take it off
veneer lab prescription
pour imps mount casts - articulator - waxbite - occlusal record - facebow construct Rx - tooth - material - thickness - characteristics - shade - translucency
alternatives to veneers
no tx
microabrasion
direct composite Rxs
crowns
cementation
resin cement matrix strip/PTFE tape for IP surfaces remove excess - before cement sets - microbrushes/probes/floss
1st veneer appt if no tooth prep required
impressions
bite reg
record shade
1st veneer appt if tooth prep required
LA if necessary make putty index imp for temp tooth prep make temp impressions bite reg record shade cement temp
veneers 2nd appt
remove temp (if provided)
isolate, clean and dry prepared tooth
try in, assess fit, adaptation and occlusion
if happy cement
