Veneer & Veneer Patterns Flashcards
What is Veneer?
Thin sheets of solid wood or cut from a log
What is a flitch?
term used for the stack or bundle of veneers cut from a log
How thin can HARDWOOD or SOFTWOOD FACE VENEER be cut?
1/40 of an inch or thinner
How thin can SOFTWOOD INTERIOR PILES be cut?
3/16 through Rotary Cut
What are the advantages to using veneer?
- Good use of declining resources
- Can be used for curved work
- Matching techniques are easier to achieve
- Various backing materials and adhesives can be used
What is a Rotary Cut method?
produces veneer by mounting the log section on a lathe and rotating it AGAINST a stationary knife
Which veneer cutting method is usually used for most softwood and some hardwood?
Rotary Cut
What is a Flat Cut method?
veneer that’s taken from half a log and cut parallel to the center of the log
Which slicing technique produces definite cathedrals on the veneer faces?
Flat Cut
What is a cathedral?
The “hills” pattern on a piece of wood
Which veneer cutting method is used to cut most hardwood?
Flat Cut
What is a Half Round method?
produces wood by mounting a half-log section on a lathe-arm and rotating it against a stationary knife
Which veneer cutting method produces wider cathedrals?
Half Round
What is a Quarter Sliced method?
veneer slices are taken from a quartered log and cut roughly parallel to the rays
Which cutting technique is commonly used for species like oak and mahogany?
Quarter Sliced
Which cutting method produces a pattern that’s referred to as a ribbon stripe?
Quarter Sliced
What is a Rift Cut method?
Creates veneer from a quartered log but cuts at roughly 45 degrees to the rays and growth rings
Which cutting method is often used for oak to minimize large ray flecks?
Rift Cut
What is a comb grain pattern?
straight and fine textured pattern that’s produced from a Rift Cut
What is Whole Piece Face (WPM) or One-Piece Face (1PF)?
Rotary Cut Veneer is cut into continuous sheets that are then re-cut into pieces that are slightly larger than the desired panel size
What are the three main methods for veneer assembly?
- Stitching
- Taping
- Edge gluing
Which veneer assembly method is done on the BACK SIDE of the veneer?
Stitching
Which veneer assembly method is done on the FACE of the veneer?
Taping
What are the two ways to add adhesives to veneer?
- Hot Pressing
- Cold Pressing
What is used for the HOT Pressing veneer adhesive?
Cross-linked PVA or UREA Formaldehyde
What is used for the COLD Pressing veneer adhesive?
any good wood glue works but hard setting glue like UF 109 are the best
