What is plywood grading based on?
Appearance of the face veneer
What are the most common grades for cabinet making referred to as?
- Good One Side (G1S)
- Good Two Sides (G2S)
What are the different SOFTWOOD PLYWOOD grades?
- A Veneer
- B Veneer
- C Veneer
What is the A Veneer grading?
- highest grade
- smooth and sound
- shows no knots, splits, pitch pockets or other open defects
- may contain a limited number of wood patches and repairs with synthetic fillers
What is the B Veneer grading?
- solid surface free of open defects
- may contain tight knots, tight splits, a slightly rough grain and a limited number of wood patches and synthetic filler repairs
- may need minor sanding and may have other patched defects
What is the C Veneer grading?
- may contain minor open defects (tight knots, small knot holes, pitch pockets, splits and worm or borer holes)
- rough and feather grain
- wood patches
When do you use Hardwood Plywood Grades?
- face veneer (A through E)
- core veneer (J through M)
- backing veneer (number grade - 1 through 4)
What is the best FACE grade?
A-A (Architectural A) - has the most even colour, grain, and almost no defects
What is the best CORE grade?
J - best core grade, allowing minimal size openings
What is the best BACK grade?
1 - provides sound surface with some colour variation and repaired small defects
What is FACE GRADE A?
Excellent appearance where A-A is not required
What is FACE GRADE B?
Good face with more allowable natural characteristics
What is FACE GRADE C, D, E?
provides sound surface but with unlimited colour variation (increase in letter value = allowable repairs)
What is SPECIALTY FACE GRADE?
- veneer characteristics unlike those in grade AA to E
- usually used when there’s a special agreement between the buyer and seller
What is CORE GRADE K & L?
- Intermediate grades that allow greater numbers and sizes of openings
