Veins of the Lower Extremity Flashcards
Great Saphenous Vein
Superficial Vein
Located MEDIALLY
Originates at from the Dorsal Vein of the Great Toe and the Dorsal Venous Arch of the Foot
Located in the subcutaneous tissue on the medial side of the foot.
Passes anterior to the medial malleolus of the tibia as it travels superiorly into the leg.
Continues as the Great Sapehnous Nerve of the leg
It goes almost posteriorly around the knee before continuing in the medial thigh in the subcutaneous tissue
Runs with the Saphenous Nerve the whole way
Ends by entering the saphenous opening and dumping in to the femoral vein
Small Saphenous Vein
Superficial Vein
Located LATERALLY
Orginates at the union of the dorsal vein of the small toe and the dorsal venous arch.
Located in the lateral subcutaneous tissue of the foot.
Runs with the sural nerve up the midline of the leg
Runs between the heads of gastrocnemuis into the popliteal fossa.
Ends by emptying into the popliteal vein in the popliteal fossa.
Popliteal Vein
Deep Vein
Formed by the union of the anterior and posterior tibial veins and a contribution form the small saphenous vein.
Ends by becoming the Femoral Vein at the Adductor Hiatus
Femoral Vein
Deep Vein
Continuation of the popliteal vein after the popliteal vine passes superiorly through the adductor hiatus
Accompanies the Femoral Artery in the Adductor Canal and Femoral Triangle 9w/in the femoral sheath)
Ends deep to the inguinal ligament where it becomes the External iliac Vein
