What is the inner circle assessment?
The inner circle assessment includes the circular area immediately surrounding the crash site and extending 10 metres outwards.
It considers:
The number of casualties
The types of injuries sustained
Forms of entrapment
Hazards involved
Access and other potential problems relating to the incident
What is the outer circle assessment?
The outer circle assessment is the circular area extending 10-30 metres from the crash (depending on size and scale of incident)
This assessment considers:
Hazards
Possible problems
Check for any injured persons that might have been thrown from the crashed vehicle(s)
Why is it vital to stabilise the vehicle(s)?
Provides a stable work platform for rescuers
Prevent further injuries to the casualty(s)
Prevent vehicle(s) movements during a rescue
Effective stabilisation must?
Be completed promptly
Be completed safely
Not hamper extrication tasks
Be checked regularly
What are the two.types of glass construction?
Tempered - most side and rear windows as well as windscreens in older vehicles. This glass shatters into small and irregular shaped pieces.
Laminated - two pieces of glass laminated together with a sheet of plastic in between them. When broken the glass breaks into shards, however, it will usually remain as a solid sheet.
What is involved in eliminating all ignition sources?
Switching off vehicle’s ignition
Switching off vehicle’s lights (if necessary)
Disconnecting the vehicles battery earth (negative) cable
Actions to be taken at all car fires/incidents?
Ensure that correct PPE is utilised
Establish a crewed, charged hose line
Have a dry Chem extinguisher ready
Consider the availability of water supply
Beware of hood, boot or rear hatch gas struts
Consider undeployed airbags (including side intrusion/curtain)
Create a safe working environment
Protect the incident with the appliance
Utilise police for traffic control
Ensure that all vehicles are stabilised
Inform police if:
The seatbelts have been cut
Any of the vehicles controls have been changed
Any items have been removed from the vehicle or surrounding scene
If the position of deceased person(s) have been changed to extricate those who are alive
Exactly how the vehicle parts have been cut, bent or pulled
The removal of any deployed airbags
What are the types of alternative fuelled vehicles?
Hybrid
Biofuel
Hydrogen
Compressed natural gas
LPG
Electric (batter only)
Steps for disconnecting a hybrid vehicle
Turn off ignition and remove smart key
Isolate ignition, smart key must be at least 5m away
Consider opening doors, windows and adjusting seats as required
Place gear selector to park position before batter is disconnected
Disconnect 12v battery if safe to do so. The negative terminal must be disconnected first
Isolate HV battery by removing fuse or relay. (will need to locate QR code or find manual to assist with this)
What actions should be taken for an LPG vehicle incident?
Evacuate the area
Approach the scene from upwind
Isolate all ignition sources
How do you identify a hybrid vehicle?
Green diamond that states hybrid on the front and rear number plate
How do you identify an electric vehicle?
Blue triangle on the front and rear number plate

What is thermal runaway?
A repeating cycle in which excessive heat causes more heat until the operation ceases or an explosion occurs. Known to happen with lithium ion batteries
