Weather and light conditions
Control and speed
Road surfaces
When it is wet you should leave…
At least double the normal stopping distance
What lights should you use in wet weather when visibility is poor but not seriously reduced?
Dipped headlights
What should you do when going through a ford?
Use a low gear
Drive through slowly
Test your brakes afterwards, wet brakes are less effective
Why should you not use fog lights when they’re not needed?
You may be breaking the law
You can dazzle other drivers
Drivers behind you won’t be able to see your brake lights as clearly or they may think you’re braking when you’re not
What should you do in foggy weather?
Use headlights
If visibility is seriously reduced use fog lights
Drive slowly
Be careful driving on the motorway
What should you do in very bad weather?
Only travel if essential
Take great care, allow plenty of time
Before you set off make sure your lights are working and your windows are clean
What can you do in deep snow?
Fit snow chains to your wheels to help with grip and prevent skidding
When might the wind catch your vehicle?
When passing a high-sided vehicle on the motorway
When driving on an exposed stretch of road
What should you do if you’re dazzled?
Slow down or stop to remain in full control
Why should you be extra careful overtaking at night?
You can’t see as far ahead and there may be bends in the road
What should you use on a motorway at night?
Dipped headlights even if the road is well lit
Sidelights if you’ve broken down and are parked on the hard shoulder, this will help other road users see you.
What reduces control?
Driving with the clutch down or in neutral for any length of time, especially of steering and braking. This is especially dangerous downhill.
What gear should you use when driving down a steep hill?
A lower gear, this can be especially important as your brakes might become less effective due to overheating
What should you do if you see a vehicle coming towards you on a single track road?
Pull into a passing place
