What is a hazard?
A situation where the driver has to respond by taking an action, such as braking or steering.
What are the types of hazards?
A static hazard- such as roundabouts and junctions
Moving hazards- other road users
Road and weather conditions
How should you act if you see a hazard?
Take a mental note of their existence
Slow down and get ready to stop if necessary
What are the risks that come with parked cars?
Children dashing out from between the cars
Car doors opening
Cars moving away
What should you do at a junction with reduced visibility?
Take extra care and pull forward slowly until you can see the road.
When should you use hazard warning lights?
If you’re driving on a motorway or dual carriageway and see a hazard or obstruction ahead
If your vehicle has broken down and is causing an obstruction
When should you not overtake?
If you’re turning left shortly afterwards
If signs and road markings prohibit this
When approaching a junction
When the view ahead is blocked
What should you think about if you see a bus at a bus stop?
People may get off the bus and cross the road
The bus may be about to move off, school buses might stop at places other than bus stops
What should you be aware of when seeing cyclists?
They may wobble or swerve to avoid drains or potholes
At junctions or traffic lights give them time to pull away
Before you turn left, check for cyclists filtering on your left
What should you do when other vehicles overtake you?
Drop back to retain a safe separation distance
What do your mirrors do?
They make sure you’re aware of your surroundings and give you a wider field of vision
What should you do if you feel tired?
Pull over at a safe and legal space to rest
On a motorway, leave at the nearest exit
What might your concentration be affected by?
Using a mobile phone
Listening to loud music
Looking at a map or satnav
What does alcohol do?
Reduces concentration, coordination and control
Gives a false sense of confidence
Reduces your judgement speed
Slows down your reactions
If you are on medication what should you do?
Check the label or ask your doctor to make sure it’s safe for you to drive
