Vegetation Flashcards
What are the four types of vegetation in the RNDB?
Tropical vegetation
Savanna grassland vegetation
Sudd/swamp vegetation
Desert vegetation
What are the characteristics of tropical vegetation?
- Only found in areas with over 1700mm of rain each year and has a temperature of over 25°C
- Some are carnivorous and eat insects as a way to survive in infertile soils
- Generally include figs, teak, mahogany and yellow woods
- Described as ‘deserts with trees’
What are the characteristics of savanna grassland vegetation?
- Wide trunks and thick bark to store water
- Thick bark protects against heat and fire
- Thick bark doesn’t burn easily
- Long roots tap underground water supplies
- Thin/spiky/waxy leaves reduce moisture loss
- Can be closed or open
What are the characteristics of sudd/swamp vegetation?
- Area of nearly 259,000km^2
- Vegetation includes papyrus, tall bamboo-like grasses, reedmace, ambatch (turor), water lettuce, water hyacinth (major pest)
What are the characteristics of desert vegetation?
- Succulent so they can store lots of water
- Small to reduce water loss by evapotranspiration
- May look woody
- Ephemerals (type of plant) develop fruit and flowers during infrequent wet periods
- Plants can be adapted to reduce water loss, have leaf hairs to reduce wind speed, have thick and waxy cuticles
- The bulk of the biomass is below ground
