Vectors: Day 1 Flashcards
What is the difference between a vector and a scalar?
vector- both magnitude and direction (ex.displacement, velocity, force)
scalar- magnitude but no direction(ex. d,v,age, temp.)
what is the difference between equivalent vectors and opposite vectors?
equivalent- same mag and direction
opposite- same mag, opposite direction
How do you determine a quadrant bearing on a graph?
[N20E]- start from N and go “x” (20) degrees E
How do you add and subtract vectors? (diagram ones)
- vectors are added tip to tail (where one ends, next one starts)
- think of the subtracted vector as the opposite vector and then add
- follow the path of vectors from starting vector letter to ending vector letter*
What are scalar multiples of vectors and how do you treat them?
ex. 2a is a scalar multiple of A as it is double the mag of the A vector and in the same direction.
- we can combine vectors like “like” terms
- distributive property applies to vectors
