Vectors: Day 1 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between a vector and a scalar?

A

vector- both magnitude and direction (ex.displacement, velocity, force)
scalar- magnitude but no direction(ex. d,v,age, temp.)

Q

How do you determine a quadrant bearing on a graph?

A

[N20E]- start from N and go “x” (20) degrees E

Q

How do you add and subtract vectors? (diagram ones)

A
  • vectors are added tip to tail (where one ends, next one starts)
  • think of the subtracted vector as the opposite vector and then add
  • follow the path of vectors from starting vector letter to ending vector letter*

Q

What are scalar multiples of vectors and how do you treat them?

A

ex. 2a is a scalar multiple of A as it is double the mag of the A vector and in the same direction.
- we can combine vectors like “like” terms
- distributive property applies to vectors
