Vectors and transformation geometry Flashcards
What does a vector have?
Both a magnitude and a direction
What is column vector notation?
(x direction/y direction)
How is the magnitude of vector AB denoted?
|AB|
How do you find the magnitude of vector AB?
Using Pythagoras’s theorem
What are rotations specified by?
A centre and an angle
How do you do a rotation?
- Trace the original shape
- Place your pencil on the centre of rotation
- Rotate the tracing paper by the given angle
- Redraw the new shape
What angle does an anti-clockwise rotation have?
Positive
What angle does a clockwise rotation have?
Negative
What are reflections specified by?
A mirror line
What are translations specified by?
A distance and direction
What are rotated, reflected or translated shapes?
Congruent
What are enlarged shapes?
Similar
What are enlargements specified by?
A centre and a scale factor
How do you do an enlargement?
- Pick a vertex and count the horizontal and vertical distances from the centre of enlargement
- Multiply both distances by the scale factor
- Start at the centre or enlargement and count the new horizontal and vertical distances to find the enlarged vertex
- Repeat for the other vertices
- Connect the vertices
