The purpose of the Week 1 Individual Assignment is to practice utilizing basic functions in InDesign. You will utilize these skills as you complete each of the assignments for this class. For this first assignment, you will not be evaluated on creativity or graphic design principals, but rather on your ability to use the software to complete each task correctly. The Week One Individual Assignment Feedback form will be used to grade this assignment.
Create an Adobe® InDesign® page layout that measures 8 ½ by 11 inches, using CMYK coloring with a resolution that is no less than 300 DPI or PPI.
Choose a topic for the page layout. You may select a topic from this list or choose another topic that you are interested in:
- College life
- A day in your life as a student
- Your work life (if applicable)
- A page on your community
Import one large image to fit the page. You may use images from a royalty-free photo site, or use your own. Points will be deducted if images are obtained illegally. Repeated offenses will be treated as plagiarism and reported accordingly. If you are unsure of the legality of using an image, please ask the instructor.
The image you select should be appropriate for classroom use in an 8 ½-by-11-inch format. Images should not be pixilated.
Use the text tool and create four slogans related to the photograph. Be creative but appropriate when writing the slogans, which can be funny, serious, or otherwise engaging.
Locate four additional images representing your chosen subject and write a full sentence explanation beneath each image.
Arrange all components into an appealing design using different fonts, and adding backgrounds to your images.
Practice arranging and creating guides on your layout to aid with consistency in alignment and positioning.
Submit your finished product as a .PDF file.
Ensure that you properly cite and document your images and include these citations in an APA reference page submitted as a Word document. If personal images are used, please cite accordingly. If images are used with permission, this should also be indicated on the APA reference page.

Select a magazine genre such as sports, popular weeklies, fashion, and so on. For the remainder of your individual assignments you will be creating magazine pages for this genre, so be sure to select a magazine genre that you are interested in working with for several weeks.

I recommend the series Design Like a Pro, which gives step-by-step instructions on how to design covers, advertisements, article layouts and tables of contents. Create a cover for a magazine that typifies the style of your selected genre.
Create hand-drawn thumbnail sketches prior to working within the Adobe® InDesign® program to think about multiple layout options before deciding on one.
Create an Adobe® InDesign® file that is 7½ by 10 inches and CMYK. This is the file size you will be using for the remainder of the course in your individual assignments.
Select a royalty-free or noncopyrighted image from the Internet or provide your own image for your cover page. Ensure that you properly cite and document your image and include it with your submission.
Adjust the image using the Adobe® Photoshop® program so that it fills the cover page and is not pixilated. Adjust anything else to make the image look cover ready. You can use you own images, but make sure that the file size is under 5 MB.
You may add secondary images that are smaller in size and incorporate them into the cover design. Add as many images as you want, but apply best practices involved with publishing design.
Write and place titles and text typically found on the cover of the type of magazine you are designing.
Complete your magazine cover, bringing together all your components into one design that keeps the target audience of your magazine genre in mind.
Submit your completed page as a .PDF.
Ensure that you properly cite and document your images and include these citations in an APA reference page submitted as a Word document.
