What are the criteria for effective overlapping of atomic orbitals?
For effective overlapping of atomic orbitals, the criteria include similarity in size, shape, and energy of the orbitals, appropriate orientation and symmetry, and optimal distance between atomic nuclei. These factors collectively contribute to the strength and stability of the resulting covalent bond.
Why was VBT supposed as incomplete?
The overlapping of half filled atomic orbitals concept i.e. VBT concept explains very well about the formation of covalent bond in diatomic molecule but it fails to explain the formation as well as geometry of polyatomic molecule.
What is hybridization?
The process of merging or intermixing of two or more than two different atomic orbitals of same central atom of nearly equal energy to form equal number of new set of orbitals having same energy content is called hybridization.
What are hybrid orbitals?
A new set of orbitals formed after intermixing of two or more than two dissimilar atomic orbitals of same central atom are called hybrid orbitals.
