vascular tumors Flashcards
strawberry hemangioma: definition, gross, locations, prognosis
benign capillary hemangioma of infancy. This is a tumor comprised of endothelial cells that forms unencapsulated aggregates of closely packed, thin-walled capillaries. Often seen in the skin, but may be in the liver, spleen, or kidneys. Grows rapidly and then regresses spontaneously around ages 5 to 8.
cherry hemangioma: definition, prognosis
benign capillary hemangioma of the elderly. does not regress. frequency increases with age.
pyogenic granuloma: definition, risk factors, complications.
rapidly growing benign tumors associated with trauma and pregnancy. lesions are NOT granulomas and NOT infections. look like polyps. May ulcerate or bleed.
cystic hygroma: definition, risk factors
cavernous lymphangioma (benign lymphatic malformation). that usually involves the neck. associated with Turner’s syndrome.
glomus tumor
benign, painful, red-blue tumor under the finernails. arieses from modified smooth muscle cells of the glomus body (involved in temperature regulation).
angiosarcoma: definition, risk factors, prognosis
rare blood vessel malignancy typically occuring in the head, neck, and breast areas. usually in elderly on sun exposed areas. associated with radiation therapy and arsenic exposure, male sex. very aggressive and difficult to resect due to delay in diagnosis. malignant cells are of vascular endothelial cell origin.
lymphangiosarcoma
also caled cutaneous angiosarcoma.
this is a lymphatic malignancy associted with persistent lymphedema, classically after a radical mastectomy. cells infiltate the dermis.
bacillary angiomatosis
benigng capillary skin papules found in AIDS patients caused by bartonella henselae infections. often mistaken for kaposi sarcoma.
kaposi sarcoma
endothelial malignancy most commonly seen on skin, but can be present in mouth, GI tract, and respiratory tract. associated with HHV-8 and HIV. often mistaken for bacillary angiomatosis.
