Vascular system Flashcards
Artery
is the component of the vascular system that arises from the heart, carrying blood away from it.
vein
travels to the heart and carries oxygen poor blood
Valves
prevent backflow in the veins
mostly absent in head & neck area, unlike in the rest of the body
Lack of valves means infections can spread more easily
Anastomosis
connection between vessels
Plexus
large network of blood vessels in a certain area
Venous sinus
blood-filled space between two layers of tissue
Pathway from Aorta to Head & neck (Left Side)
Common carotid & subclavian arteries arise directly & separately from the aorta
Pathway from Aorta to Head & neck (Right Side)
Brachiocephalic artery branches directly from Aorta
Common carotid & subclavian arteries are both branches off of the brachiocephalic artery.
Subclavian Artery
Gives rise to branches that supply both intracranial & extracranial structure, but its major destination is the upper arm
Common carotid artery
divides into the external carotid & internal carotid arteries at about level of the larynx.
Common carotid artery splits into
Internal Carotid Artery
External Carotid Artery
Internal Carotid Artery
Travels superiorly & supplies intracranial structures
Is source of the ophthalmic artery, which supplies the eye, orbit, and lacrimal gland.
External Carotid Artery
Travels superiorly to supply extracranial tissue of head & neck including oral cavity.
Has four branches:
Anterior, medial, posterior, terminal
Superior thyroid artery
supplies tissue inferior to hyoid bone
Ascending palatine artery
supplies soft palate, palatine muscles, palatine tonsils
Submental artery
supplies the submandibular lymph nodes, submandibular salivary gland, mylohyoid and digastric muscles
Inferior labial artery
supplies lower lip tissue and some muscles of facial expression
