vascular supply Flashcards
1
Q
brain is a high-demand consumer
A
- receives 20-25% of blood circulating in body
- uses 25% of oxygen produced
- completely dependent on blood supply as there are no reserves
2
Q
STUDY BLOOD VASCULAR SUPPLY
A
IN NOTES
3
Q
2 anterior cerebral arteries
A
supplied by the internal carotids
- mostly anterior FL and corpus callosum
- swoops posteriorly toward parieto-temproal-occipital area
4
Q
2 middle cerebral arteries
A
- supplied by the internal carotids
- fan-shaped distribution to most lateral brain surface, temporal, parietal, posterior FL
5
Q
2 posterior cerebral arteries
A
- supplied by the basilar (via the vertebrals)
- occipital lobe, lower temporal lobe
6
Q
collateral supply
A
a system of blood supply to the brain in case of blockage
-overlap between the cerebral arteries as distribution spreads out, to small vessels at the periphery
7
Q
BBB
A
- selective permeability of capillaries, arteries (astrocytes help form barrier)
- restricts toxic substances from leaving bloodstream and entering brain tissue or extracellular fluid
- allows “good stuff” in and some “bad stuff” out
