Describe the pathophysiology of a femoral aneurysm
50% larger than its normal diameter
What is the aetiology of a femoral aneurysm?
Trauma
Infection
CT disease (Marfan’s)
Inflammatory disease
Main causes
1) Percutaneous vascular interventions
2) Intravenous drug users who inject into the groin
Name the risk factors for a femoral aneurysm
Smoking
HTN
Hyperlipidaemia
FH
What symptoms are seen in someone with a femoral aneurysm
Varying degrees of claudication
Swelling in the groin
What investigations should be performed for a suspected femoral aneurysm?
US duplex = useful for detection and follow up
CT angiography = gold standard
MR angiography
Outline the management for a femoral aneurysm
Surgical repair = ligation of the aneurysm or resection of the aneurysm with a bypass graft (either a vein from the patient (preferred) or a graft)
What are the complications of a femoral aneurysm?
Rupture (rare)
