Variety Of Living Organisms Flashcards
What are the common features of living organisms in the protoctists kingdom?
Single cell organisms larger than bacteria
Cell contains a nucleus
Have many features of animal or plant cells
Some can be pathogens such as plasmodium- causes malaria
What are the common features of living organisms in the fungi kingdom?
Single or multicellular organisms
Yeast is an example of a single cell
Multicellular are made up of fine threads known as hyphae - each hyphae contains many nuclei
Do not contain chlorophyll so secrete digestive enzymes outside the cells onto animal or plant material- this is saprotrophic nutrition
Some fungi are pathogens and cause diseases in other organisms e.g. Ringworm
What are the common features of living organisms in the bacteria kingdom?
Single called microscopic organisms
Smaller than animal or plant cells
No nucleus - single circular chromosome is in cytoplasm
Some have plasmids- circles of genetic material
Have a cell wall and membrane
How many classes do vertebrates have?
5 Mammals Birds Reptiles Fish Amphibians
What does classification mean?
Grouping living organisms into groups according to similar characteristics.
What are the common features of living organisms in the virus kingdom?
Are particles rather than cells
Protein coat surrounding genetic information- DNA or RNA
Are parasites - only reproduce inside other cells
What is the binomial system
Classification using Genus then species
Genus has a capital letter, species is all lower case
What are the common features of living organisms in the plant kingdom?
Multicellular
Have cells with: Cell wall, Cell membrane and some cells have chloroplasts
Plants photosynthesise- use the suns energy to mark carbohydrates - starch or sucrose.
How many classes do arthropods have?
4 Insects Arachnids Crustaceans Myriapods
How many kingdoms are there in the classification of living organisms?
6 Plants Animals Fungi Bacteria Protoctists Viruses
In order from largest to smallest state the grouping titles involved in classification.
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
What is a kingdom?
The largest group in biological classification
What is a key?
A series of clues/ statements that help do identify specific organisms.
How many phyla (phylum) does the animal kingdom have?
5 Vertebrates Arthropods Annelids Molluscs Nematodes
What are the common features of living organisms in the animal kingdom?
Multicellular organisms
Eat other Arianism to get nutrition
Animal cells have a cell membrane but no cell wall
Use nerves to coordinate movement to enable movement from one location to another
Store lipids as a layer of fat as a store of energy
