Define standard deviation
Measure of the spread of the values
Define the mean
The average of all the numbers. Calculated by adding up all the values and dividing my the number of them
What is sampling
Taking measurements of individuals selected from the population being investigated. If individuals are representative of whole population, results are reliable
What is sample bias
Unrepresentative result
How is sample bias avoided
Random sampling- divide study area into a grid, use random numbers chart to generate coordinates
How is chance removed from a sample
Use larger sample size- the more individuals, the smaller the probability that chance will influence the result, so more reliable
Analysis of data collected- statistic test used, determine the extent to which chance influenced the data
