Variation of Life Flashcards
1
Q
Name the bond that joins two monosaccharides together
A
Glycosidic
2
Q
Name the monomers that form a cellulose molecule
A
Beta Glucose
3
Q
Give 5 ways in which the structure of cellulose is different from the structure of starch.
A
Starch: 1,4 and 1,6 bonds (branched), all glucose monomers same way up, helix/coiled/compact, alpha glucose, no micro/macro fibrils/fibres
Cellulose: 1,4 bond (unbranched), alternating monomers upside down, straight, beta glucose, micro/macro fibrils/fibres
4
Q
Explain one way in which the structure if cellulose is linked to its function.
A
Can form H-bonds / micro/macro fibrils/fibres
Strength/rigidity/inelasticity
