Variation, genes and alleles Flashcards
What is variation
Variation is the presence of differences between living things of the same species.
5 examples of human variation
Accent, eye colour, hair colour, height, mass, intelligence, spots
Inherited variation
Something that you inherited (or got) from your parents.
Environmental

What is a gene
A gene is something that is inherited or passed down from one relative to another and It’s a section of DNA. Genes form part of a chromosome in the DNA.
How many genes are there in the human body
There are around 26,000 in the human body
What is an allele
A different version of the same gene. They will only be expressed when both are of the same type e.g hh
What is a dominant gene
Dominant genes overrule Alleles. They are always expressed, even if you just have one. Represented by a capital letter.
