Genetically Inherited Diseases and selective breeding Flashcards
What is cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is an disease. It affects the lungs and digestive system. The air passages in lungs are coated with a flow of , which traps and removes bacteria. In a person with cystic fibrosis mucus is thicker than normal.
Is cystic fibrosis recessive or dominant
Recessive
What alleles does a person need to have it (cystic fibrosis)
Two recessive (cc)
Polydactyl
Polydactyl is a dominant allele, you cannot carry it so if you have the letter P the you will suffer from it
What is selective breeding
Selective breeding is when you select two things with different characteristics and keep breeding them and there offspring until you create a perfect version
What are the main steps
- Decide which characteristics are important enough to select
- Choose parents that show these characteristics
- Choose the best offspring from parents to produce the next generation.
- Report the process continuously
What are some problems with selective breeding
Ethical (increase in likelihood of disorders)
Welfare (breeding, mortality rate)
