variation and evolution Flashcards
what is variation
the differences in characteristics in a population
what causes variation
inherited genes of individuals, or environmental conditions of individuals
what is evolution
gradual change in inherited characteristics of a population over time
what is natural selection
natural selection states that all species have evolved from simple life forms that first developed 3 billion years ago
how do mutations help variation and natural selection
mutations rarely affect the phenotype but when they do it can give certain individuals an advantage over others
who is Wallace
suggested a similar theory to darwin in 1885 which pushed darwin to publish his theory
what is evidence for evolution
fossils
how are fossils made
hard parts of animals don’t decay
when parts of an organism are replaced by other materials as they decay
why are there gaps in fossil records
early life forms were soft bodied so the little traces left have been destroyed by geological activities
what is antibiotic resistance
some bacteria mutate a resistant gene
other bacteria are killed by antibiotics leaving good conditions for multiplying
new strand is created
