Variation Flashcards

1
Q

why is variation important

A

so that all organisms are not genetically identical so that they can evolve to the environment

Q

explain meiosis variation

A

random arrangement of chromosomes in metaphase on equator and random crossing over of bivalents in P1
creates new alleles and therefore genetic variance

Q

explain mutation variations

A

alteration in the nucleotide sequence (germ line/ gamaetic)
change in order/ duplication of chromosome- create new gentotypes which can lead to new phenotypes

Q

explain chance fertilization variation

A

random male sperm will fertilize random female ovum resulting in uniques organisms with different combinations of traits

Q

distinguish between continuous and discontinuous variation

A

continuous is variation that has multiple genes therefore range of phenotypes and environmental component such as height
discontinuous is single gene with multiple alleles at locus and no environmental component such as blood groups
