Variation Flashcards
What is a population size?
Total number of organisms of one species in a habitat
What is carrying capacity?
The maximum stable population size of a species that an ecosystem can support
Name abiotic factors that causes population size to vary
Light
Water
Space
Temperature
Chemical composition of surroundings
What happens why abiotic conditions are ideal and when they aren’t ideal?
Ideal = species grow fast and can successfully reproduce
Aren’t ideal = species grow slowly and unsuccessfully reproduce
Name the biotic factors that causes population size to vary
Interspecific competition
Intraspecific competition
Predation
What is interspecific competition?
Competition between different species for food, water, light (etc.). A population will outcompete another species (competitive exclusion principle)
What is intraspecific competition?
When organism of the same species compete with each other for the same resources
What is predation?
Where an organism kills and eats another organism. (predator/prey relationship)
