Variation Flashcards
What is variation
the differences that exist between individuals
what are the 2 types of variation
1) Intraspecific: Variation within species
2) Interspecific: Variation between different species
what are the two ways of categorising variation
continuous variation- where things vary within a range ( no distinct categories)
E.G mass, number of leaves, milk yield, width and length
Discontinuous Variation- When there are two or more distinct categories
e.g Blood group, colour, seed shape, Antibiotic resistance, pigment production
Variation affected by Genetic Factors
- Individuals of the same species have the same genes but different versions of them called alleles
- a genotype is the genes and alleles that make up an organism
- difference in genotype CAUSES VARITION in phenotype ( which is the characteristics of an organism)
EG blood type and antibiotic resistance
you inherit genetic factors from your parents
Variation affected by Environmental Factors
- Variation can also be caused by differences in the environment ( EG climate, food , lifestyle)
- Characteristics controlled by environmental factors can change over an organisms life
- examples of variation only caused by environmental factors is ACCENTS
How variation can be affected by both genetic and environmental factors
genetic factors determine the characteristics an organism is born with but environmental factors can influence how some characteristics develop
EG height - diet or nutrient availability
Flagellum- genes normally determine whether you have one or not, but some organisms will only grow flagellum in certain environments
THE MIDDLE OF THE SYMETRICAL BELLE SHAPED CURVE IS THE….
the Mean
did not mean to caps that thoooooooo
for standard deviation of belle curves
the wider the curve the further away the values are from the mean
the narrower the graph the less the values vary from the mean so a smaller standard deviation
