Variables Flashcards
What is the dependent variable?
The variable that is measured in the experiment
What are extraneous variables?
The variable that is kept the same/controlled
What is operationalisation?
Making a variable as measurable as possible
What is a confounding variable?
A variable that may have affected the dependent variable. It is usually found after the experiment has happened
What are the three main types of extraneous variables?
Participant variables - individual differences between the participants that could affect the dependent variable (age and IQ)
Situational variables - the experiment setting and surrounding environment (temperature and noise level)
Experimenter variables - Changes in the personality, apparent and conduct of the researched (female researchers may gain different results to male ones)
What is the independent variable?
The variable that is changed in the experiment
