Variables Flashcards
Independent Variable
The variable that the researcher changes
Done by having a different value of this variable in each experimental condition
Dependent Variable
The variable that the researcher measures
Controlling Variables
To test IV and Dv, necessary to keep all other variables constant though confounding variables
Confounding Variables
An outside variable changes across two conditions, this becomes a confounding variable and can ruin the experiment
Extraneous Variable
Variables which can’t be elimination - temperature
Counter Balancing
Includes allocating participants to conditions by half completing 1st condition, other half completing 2nd condition
Prevents order from becoming a confounding variable because the effect is balanced out over two conditions
Standardisation
Using a standard procedure for all participants to avoid extraneous variables/confounding variables affecting the results
