what is utilitarianism
greatest good for the greatest number of people; focuses on the effect of an action
what is deontology
focuses on the rights of the individual, does not consider the greater good or consequences of specific actions on others
principle based approach
beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, justice, veracity, fidelity
beneficence is
doing good, promoting good on behalf of others/ careful evaluation of benefit vs harm for each individual
nonmaleficence is
preventing harm to others “do no harm”
autonomy is
respect for a persons right to make their own decisions
justice is
fairness, be award of subtle biases
veracity is
being honest
fidelity is

legal scope of practice, standard minimum: requirement for providing safe patient care, credentialing: accreditation programs/ NCLEX/ certification
criminal laws do what
prevent harm to society, provide punishment (felony >1 year, misdemeanor < 1)
