Value Flashcards
value
relative lightness or darkness of an area or object
value drawing
drawing devoid of color(relies on black, white, and grays to translate and represent color and light patterns)
conditions that influence value
local color, amount of light, and surrounding values
local color
actual color of the surface as it would appear if it were unaffected by light or shadow
continuous tone
images that have a virtually unlimited range of shades of grays
value pattern
the arrangment and the amount of variation in light and dark
optical mixing
perception of values from the combination of black and white ex: using hatch marks (closer or further together) to imply values
value scale
a diagram of shades; it starts with the lightest value on one end and gradually descends in stages to the darkest value on the other end
low contrasts
values that are next to each other on the value scale
high contrast
values that are far apart on the value scale
value schemes
the combinations of values within a drawing
value shapes
the shape in which a value is applied to a compositions
light logic
highlight, light tone, midtone, reflected light, shadow, core shadow, and cast shadow
value contrast
the essential relationship between areas of light and dark
surrounding background
influences our perception of midtones
value composition
comprised of large flat(unvaried) areas of value that form a simplified version of the finished piece
principles of simulataneous contrast
the careful positioning of a limited number of tones in a composition that helps create a powerful abstract foundation of values
seeing values
squint, compare, map
shading/modeling
uses chiaroscuro or blending
hatching
parallel lines
corss-hatching
parallel lines that intersect
stippling
series of strateically placed dots
cylinders, cones, and organic voluems
create a gradual change from light to dark(they often have soft edges
cubes, pyramids, and other angular forms
change abruptly from light to dark at the intersections of their planes
chiaroscuro
uses light and dark to imply volume- not line; relies of value shifts (via hard and soft edges) to depict volume
tenebrism
a technique used by artists to create a 3D illusion which goes quickly from higligts to deep shadow; stark contrast from light to dark
high key range
middle gray to white
low key range
middle gray to black
when adressing value
where is my light source located, where is my darkest value, where is my lightest value, where do the others fall on the value scale, how do all the values relate to each other
tips
constantly compare every value with each value; glaze drawing paper first, simplify the values into big shapes, use a limited scale, work from life, general to specific(details come last)
