Color & Pastels Flashcards
pastel
composed of a pigment and a binder
soft pastels
consist of pigment mixed with an aqueous binder
hard pastels
contain more binder than soft pastels and are compressed in a hard stick form
oil pastels
consist of pigment mixed with an oily binder because oil pastels are not as easily smudged, they are great for outdoor sketching
drawing with a pastel
make a small preliminary color sketch; greatest richness of color results from the direct application of colors side by side or with cross-hatching techniques; excessive blending of colors produces lifeless color and uninteresting surfaces
is color real?
color is actually an illusion and only “perceived” by our brain
additive color
created when you mix colored light
subtractive color
mixing of pigments
primary colors
yellow, red, blue
secondary colors
orange, green, violet
tertiary colors (total of 6)
mix a primary and adjacent secondary together
visual color mixing
visual effect of color mixing occurs in the eye based on placement/proximity of colors and how the eye perceives interactions
color interaction
the optical/visual alteration of a color by a surrounding color
warm colors
red-orange side of the color wheel
cool colors
blue-green side of the color wheel
local color
used by artists who aim to recreate visible reality as accurately as possible
optical color
when artists simulate the visual effects of different lighting conditions and their effect on objects
arbitrary color
the use of a color that is not normally associated with the visible reality of the subject being depicted
hue
a color that is discernible as red green, etc. & defining a color that is dependent on its dominant wavelength and independent of intensity or lightness
value
refers to the lightness or darkness of a color (hue)
intensity
the quality of light in a color or its brightness; a hue is brightest when it is pure
color schemes/harmonies
visual unity created by balance of visual elements
monochromatic
a design that uses one (mono) color (chroma) and its shades, tints, and tones
analogous
analogous color schemes contain 3-4 colors that lie adjacent to one another on the color wheel
complementary
complementary color schemes use colors that lie directly opposite of one another on the color wheel
split complementary
use a color with the two colors that are on the either side of its complementary color
triadic
use 3 (tri) colors that are equidistant of each other on the color wheel
color’s functions
emphasizing a focal point, lead the eye through the a compositions, create balance between elements, create and reinforce 3-D illusions, create unity/harmony or disunity, add variety
tint
the amount of lightness acheived by adding white
tone
the amount of richness acheived by adding gray
shade
the amount of darkness acheived by adding black
