What was the aim of Vallentine et al. (2013) study?
To invetsigate the usefulness of psychoeducation in a high security setting (Broadmoor Hospital).
What is psychoeducation?
Where you teach a patient and their family about their illness.
Where did the study take place?
High security hospital - Broadmoor Hospital.
What was the sample?
42 male patients with Sz or related disorders who have been identified as being likely to benefit from pscyhoeducation.
How long did the study last?
20 sessions over a 3 year period. Each session was a form of treatment to prevent relapse.
What methods were used in the study?
- Semi-structured interviews.
- Questionnaires.
What 2 questionnaires where used?
- CORE-OM: to measure outcomes of clinical disorders.
- SCQ: 30 item self-concept questionnaire asking for own perception of self-esteem.
Why were semi-structured interviews used?
Used to be able to understand their experiences better and to improve the psychoeducational group, that they are a part of, in the future.
What records were made from the sessions?
Changes in…
- Medication.
- Violent incidents.
- Engagement.
- Compliance.
- Verbal comments.
If patients didn’t complete the study, what were they known as?
“non-completers”
If patients completed the study, what were they known as?
“Completers”
What were the themes of the content analysis carried out on therir responses?
- ‘What participants valued and why’.
- ‘What was helpful about the group’.
- ‘Clinical implications’.
- ‘What was difficult/unhelpful’.
Results?
- From the 21 completers, that were given structured interviews, all said they would recommend the group to others.
- Using semi-structured interviews, patients valued hearing other people’s experiences (helped understand their symptoms and treatment availble so they could recover).
- Using 2 questionnaires, no sig clinical change between completers and non-completers.
- They indicated 50% of group had improved self-esteem.
But…
- Unhelpful because of guilt about the past and didn’t like talking in a large group.
- Group met early morning so felt too tired to really engage.
Conclusions?
Psychoeducation group was useful for the p’s. Helped them to understand their illness, which they valued, and understand other people’s experience with the illness. Increased their confidence with the illness.
