Validity Flashcards
What is validity
Measure of accuracy, does test measure what it says it is
What is internal validity
Extent to which the findings of the DV have to do with manipulation of IV and not other factors eg demand characteristics
What is external validity and the two types
Whether the results can be generalised to the general population, populations and ecological validity
What is population validity
Extent to which the results can be generalised to the general population
What is ecological validity
Extent to which the results can be generalised to the real world and to real life, setting in which the experiment takes place and tasks involved must have high mundane realism
What is mundane realism
Degree to which the procedures involved in an experiment are similar to events that occur in the real world
What is face validity
Degree to which a procedure appears effective in terms of its stated aims, simplest technique of assessing validity
How is face validity measured
Independent expert looks at the measure being used to assess whether it will measure what it has set out ti
What is concurrent validity
Comparing the new procedure with a similar procedure that has been done before where validity has already been established, if scores correlate as a strong correlation (+.80) then test deemed valid
What is temporal validity
Whether results from a study remain true and valid over a period of time
How to improve validity of experimental research
Use control group which gives something to compare the experimental group to
-standardised procedures, minimise effects of participant and investigator effects
-double blind procedures reduce demand characteristics
How to improve validity of observation
-covert means ppts more likely to behave naturally
-ensure behavioural categories are not too broad, not overlapping or ambiguous
How to improve validity of questionnaire
Include lie scale within the questions in order to assess the consistency of ppts responses and reduce SDB
-anonymous responses
How to improve validity of qualitative methods
-more valid that quantitative as depth and detail associated with case studies and interviews better reflect the ppts reality
-may have to demonstrate interpretive validity, interpretations matches those of their ppts
-triangulation, use of a number of dif sources as evidence
