Reliability Flashcards
What is reliability
Extent to which a test produces a consistent finding every time it is done, expect the test to find the same results if carried out on another day
What is external reliability
Over time produces the same results each time test is carried out
What is the test-retest method and what is it used to assess
Do the same test with same ppts again at a dif time, has to be sufficient time between tests in order to prevent ppts remembering their og answers. For external validity of questionnaires and interviews
What is internal reliability
Items in questionnaire/psychological test are consistent within themselves eg all measuring depression
What is Inter-observer reliability and what is it used to assess
When more than one person has seen the behaviours and believe their is consistency in what was seen, without this subjectivity bias and unreliability in collection process may occur. Internal validity of observation.
How to increase inter observer reliability
-pilot study to make sure they are measuring the behaviour categories the same way, use behavioural categories to ensure they are looking at the same behaviours
What is split-half method and what is it used to assess
Split test in two and have same ppt doing both halves of the test, if two halves provide similar results questionnaire has internal reliability
What degree of correlation reliable
When correlation coefficient +.8 or above
How to improve external reliability of interview
Same interviewer, trained to avoid leading/ambiguous questions, structured)
How to improve reliability of questionnaire
Rewrite questions to reduce ambiguity, leading and open questions
How to improve reliability of observation
Operationalise behavioural categories(measurable, self evident and not overlap), pilot study to agree on example of each category
How to increase reliability of experiment
Lab experiment with control of EVs, precise replication of methods, same conditions
