Validity Flashcards
Two types of validity
Internal
External
Internal validity
The study measures what it intends to measure (as confounding variables have been controlled and will not affect results)
External validity
Whether the study paints a true picture of real life behaviours (mudane realism) and would apply to different places, different times or different people (population validity)
What are validity issues
Researcher bias
Demand characteristics
Social desirability
Researcher bias
Researcher directly or indirectly influences the results of the study, through the process of designing the study or through the way the research is conducted
Demand characteristics
Participants unconsciously work out the aim and act differently
Social desirability
Participants give the response they think will show them in the best possible light meaning they are not true reflection of their thoughts/feelings
How do we deal with validity issues
Double blind procedure
Single blind procedure
Giving participants anonymity and confidentiality
How can researcher bias be overcome
Double blind procedure
Neither researcher collecting data
Nor participant involved , knowing true aims of study also reduces demand characteristics
How can social desirability and demand characteristics be overcome
Single blind procedure
This involves participant being unaware until after their is complete
How can independent groups reduce validity
Giving participants anonymity and confidentiality when they give answers increases validity
Face validity
Whether test appears (at face value) to measure what it claims to and and hence is objective
Tests where the purpose is clear even to naïve respondents they are said to have high face validity
