Poem is written free verse and no structure so reflecting the instability of the relationship.

her gift is not unique but basic and represents realistic love.

Love causes pain, those in love are vulnerable.

“trying” suggests it’s not easy.
She is being honest.

experience of love will stay with you.

speaker sees marriage as restrictive.
“It’s scent will cling to your fingers, cling to your knife”
Love is long lasting and cuts deep.
