Explain the context of The Manhunt.
a soldier who served in Bosnia. He was discharged from the army because of his physical and psychological injuries.
What is the structure of The Manhunt?
made up of couplets, mostly unrhymed, which gives sense of fragmentation just like the feelings of the soldiers wife as she tries to get to know him again.
“After the first phase, after passionate nights and intimate days”
Suggests it’s a gradual process and implies impermanence
“Only then would he let me trace the frozen river which ran through his face”
The metaphor suggests that his recovery and emotions are frozen from war experience.
“and handle and hold the damaged, porcelain collar-bone”
suggests that he’s fragile
“and finger and thumb the parachute silk of his punctured lung”
physically, the soldier is very strong but mentally he is damaged.
“and feel the hurt of his grazed heart”
she feels deep empathy for him.
“a sweating, unexploded mine buried deep in his mind”
he has unresolved trauma and he can burst at any moment.
“then and only then did i come close”
shows that it’s a long process of reconnecting with her husband.
