retro-olivary groove of medulla oblongata - forms lateral mixed system with glossopharyngeal and accessory nerves - runs dorsally to bronchi and caudally joins the oesophagus- gives off the right recurrent laryngeal nerve - left vagus nerve forms ventral trunk and right vagus nerve forms dorsal trunk - branches reach organs
