What is vaginal thrush (4)

A
  1. a fungal infection caused by a yeast calledCandida albicans.
  2. antifungals are used in the treatment of this infection.
  3. Candida lives in our bodies but it usually does not cause any problems that we are aware of.
  4. Under certain circumstances, the amount of candida increases and triggers the occurrence of a number of symptoms.

What is used to treat thrush (7)

A
  1. OTC in the form of pessaries (internal) and creams (external and internal) containing antifungals.
  2. clotrimazole
  3. Fluconazole(tablet)
  4. Partners do not need to be treated unless they have symptoms.
  5. If a candida infection is suspected in men as the cause of symptoms, an antifungal cream is usually recommended.
  6. If symptoms are severe, fluconazole oral capsule is recommended.
  7. Any man who is experiencing symptoms for the first time, for example discharge from the penis or any sores on it, or where it is coming back regularly, should be referred to the pharmacist as it could be a sign of something more serious.

What is vaginal dryness (3)

A
  1. might also be mistaken for thrush
  2. although it tends to be more common in women who have gone through the menopause.
  3. The hormonal changes that happen at this time can dry out the vagina, so vaginal lubricants can be helpful.

How is vaginal dryness treated (4)

A
  1. There is an over-the-counter product called Gina®which contains estradiol, a female sex hormone.
  2. It is a tablet for vaginal use only, that can be used to treat and relieve vaginal symptoms causing discomfort post menopause.
  3. It is only suitable for women aged 50 years or over, who have not had a period for at least 1 year.
  4. Patients must speak to the pharmacist first to determine suitability.
