Dtap vs Tdap
given q 10 years
6 years and younger: use Dtap
7 + yrs: use only Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria pertussis)
if someone has a tetanus-prone wound and unknown vaccination status…
give Td/Tdap and tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG) asap
pneumococcal conjugate (PCV13/Prevnar or PCV15) for children < 2 years old:
give PCV13 or PCV15 as 4 dose series (2 mo, 4 mo, 6 mo, 12-15 mo)
pneumococcal vaccine (PCV15 or PCV20) for all age 65 or older
Give PCV 13/15 first (if never had PPSV23) then 1 year later, give PPSV23
-if PCV20 is used, do not give PPSV23
What age group should receive the shingles vaccine?
60 years old + as Subq route even if had shingles in past
what are the live vaccines?
MMR
Rotavirus
Varicella (chicken pox/Varivax)
Yellow fever
Zostavax (not used anymore)
when to give meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4)?
start age 11 to 12, 1st year college students living in dorms at higher risk
Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine is for
tuberculosis infection
made from live mycobacterium tuberculosis
BCG can cause what on a TB skin test (Mantoux)
false positive
if pt has hx of BCG vaccine and got a positive on PPD…
get TB blood testing (Quantiferon)
most ppl with + TB blood test have latent TB infection
