vaccinations Flashcards
1
Q
What is a vaccination?
A
An injection containing dead or inactive pathogens that stimulate white blood cells to make antibodies
2
Q
What does vaccination a large number of the population do to the spread of pathogens?
A
The spread is reduced
3
Q
Describe 6 steps as to how pathogens work
A
- Vaccine enters body, pathogen makes immune system respond
- White blood cells make antibodies to attack pathogen
- Pathogen has been made harmless so is destroyed quick
- Body now has defences against pathogen
- The defences are antibodies in blood and memory cells (type of white cell)
- If pathogen attacks body again, the memory cells produce antibodies to destroy it quickly
