Heart and Circulatory system Flashcards
What is a double circulatory system?
It is a system involving the heart pumping blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen. The blood is then returned to the heart to then be pumped to the respiring cells of the body.
how many chambers are in the heart?
4
Name the 4 chambers of the heart
Right atrium, Right ventricle, Left atrium, Left ventricle
Do the atria have thin walls or thick walls?
Thin walls
What do the atria do?
Receive blood from the veins
Do the ventricles have thin walls or thick walls?
Thick walls
What do the ventricles do?
They forcefully pump blood out of the heart
Does the right atrium receive deoxygenated blood or oxygenated blood?
Deoxygenated blood
Does the left atrium receive deoxygenated blood or oxygenated blood?
Oxygenated blood
Where does the right atrium receive the blood from?
Systematic veins
Where does the left atrium receive the blood from?
Pulmonary veins
Why does the heart need valves?
To keep blood flowing in the correct direction
If blood flows from the right atrium, which chamber does it go to next?
The right ventricle
If blood flows from the right ventricle, where does it go next?
The lungs
If blood flows from the left ventricle, where does it go next?
The tissues of the body
What is the (inferior) vena cava?
A large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the heart
What is the aorta?
The main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body
What does the pulmonary artery do?
It carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
What does the pulmonary vein do?
It carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
